What to Expect
Range of training programmes at various levels. Study for academic qualifications in Marine Engineering (or similar subject). Entry requirements vary.
Once qualified the Engineer Officer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the main engine and all of the ships ancillary mechanical systems. Traditionally a Ship’s engineer would have maintained watches 24/7, but today it is more likely that the engine room will be unmanned with the duty Engineer responsible for responding to alarms, day or night.

Second Engineer.
