Training Programmes

Outcome

An STCW Deck Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency, plus one of the following academic awards:

  • Foundation Degree (Available in England only).
  • Professional Diploma (Available in Scotland only).
  • Higher National Certificate or Diploma.
Exemptions
The Foundation Degree/Professional Diploma and HND qualifications provide exemptions from all written examinations up to and including Chief Mate/Master level.
Minimum Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirements are 48 UCAS points plus GCSE at grade C or above in Maths (preferably higher tier, English and Science (with significant Physical Science content).
Framework
5 alternating college and sea periods as per the following outline (Please note the length of each phase are only approximate guidelines and the exact duration will vary from college to college):

Phase 1 (At College): 15/20 wks.

Phase 2 (Sea & Leave): 8/10 mths.

Phase 3 (At College): 30 wks.

Phase 4 (Sea & Leave): 10/12 mths.

Phase 5 (At College): 15/20 wks.

Sea Service
12 months minimum. However, in order to achieve the intended outcomes of work-based learning and complete the programme of practical training, it is recommended by MNTB that at least an additional 3 months of sea service is allowed for in the design of schemes incorporating a Foundation Degree.
Watchkeeping
6 months minimum completed within the last 12 months of sea service.
Start Dates
September each year, with more limited options to commence training in January each year.

Approval

All programmes must be MCA/MNTB approved.

Academic Top-Up Options

Candidates who successfully achieve a full HND are then eligible to top-up the academic award to a BSc (Hons) Degree in Marine Operations Management.
