Your first step to becoming a Deck Officer (sometimes referred to as a Navigation Officer) in the Merchant Navy is to complete a 3-year Deck Cadet Training programme. You will study at one of the specialist UK nautical colleges and your shore-based studies will be interspersed with the completion of sea service.

Range of training programmes at various levels. Study for academic qualifications in Nautical Science (or similar subject). Entry requirements vary.
Qualified Deck Officer is responsible for:
Safety of vessel, crew, passengers and cargo.
Vessel navigation.
Maintaining strict schedules.
Cargo operations in port.
Vessel stability.
Security.
Opportunities to qualify for:
Chief Mate.
Master.
